John McLean is a Junior sports broadcaster at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, with award-winning experience in play-by-play, sideline reporting, anchoring, producing, directing & storytelling on and off campus. With his work in his sophomore year, McLean became the first Blugold to recieve a NATAS Upper Midwest Student Production Award for Talent in News & Sports.
For UWEC, McLean is a play-by-play voice for all Blugold home sporting events, calling every NCAA-sanctioned team sport the school has to offer. Those being football, basketball, volleyball, women's lacrosse, soccer, hockey, baseball, & softball. He also serves as a sideline reporter for Blugold football games during the fall.
Out of the booth and in the studio for Eau Claire's student-run television station, TV10, John is the co-host & producer of Blunation. The show's premise is to cover all happenings within Blugold sports as the university's own SportsCenter-esque program: top plays from the previous week, in-depth analysis on games, interviews with players & coaches, mic'd-up practices, mini documentaries, and more. In 2026, Blunation was named the WBA's Best Sports Show in the university system, as well as notching an Upper Midwest Student Production Award from NATAS in the category of College Sports Program.
Off campus, he is also the sideline reporter during the high school football season in Rice Lake, following the Warriors with Rice Lake Community Media. Additionally, he joined 3-time Northwoods League Broadcaster of the Year Pete Knutson for the 2025 season, calling games for the Eau Claire Express. In the summer of 2026, John joined the intern team at ESPN Madison, learning from their producers on weekly shows such at Jim, Matt & Molly, The Jump Around and Wilde & Tausch, as well as assisting in social media content creation for various platforms.
